RootsWeb’s WorldConnect Project: A Reconstruction of Jenkins-Terry, Gregory-Green-Barnett with Mullinax, Mullins, West; Strange-LeStrange back to 1022; McSwain-Padgett-Hamrick-Green-Butler

I received and message from the admin at Find a Grave letting me know I misplaced one of the gravestone pics. I accidentally posted my grandmother’s stone in my grandfather’s account. The email only had an ID of the posting, so in doing a search I came across Orville Jenkin’s new and improved Family Tree. Will dig into it more when I have time, but here’s the bit about my grandfather (mostly pulled from my info):

Jake Unruh Ancestery

I received this email on June 4, 2011:

I am Kenneth Henderson, grandson of Kenneth Unruh, and i found your sight and address on genealogy sight and was hoping to ask some questions/get more info about the Unruh’s. According to the stories in our family great (great?) grandpa Jake was smuggled out of Russia in a fishing boat and that how we came to America. My Unruh side is from Kansas, and moved out to California when my grandpa was young. His parents were Rudolph and Rosa. They were all native German speakers. In fact my grandpa didn’t speak English until he was 5. Sadly he lost the language and forgot it, but always got a dreamy look in his eye when I spoke it for him. I’m hoping you might be a link to learn more about my German/Unruh ancestry. If you have time please get back to me and perhaps we can share notes?

My reply:

Thanks for the email. I’ll take a look at my information and see if I can find your family. Off the top of my head I don’t remember a Rudolph and Rosa Unruh, but I do have passenger lists that list many Unruhs who immigrated from Russian Poland to Kansas. I know my grandmother, Ruby Unruh, spoke what she called “low German” until she was five also. She had a nephew named Kenneth Unruh, but his parents were named Henry and Katherine.

From Kenneth:

Thank you for getting back to me. Actually the grandparent that immigrated was Jake Unruh, his son was Rudolph who married Rosa and had my grandpa Kenneth. Also something about twin cousins? Herman and Harold I think? If not closely related could we be a extension of clan Unruh? Any info would be great.

I had no additional info, but anyone who does can contact me and I’ll pass it along.

Thanks for reading!

Will the Real Rita J. Callahan Please…

My father and I have been in search of records that would give us a clue to the ancestery on his mother’s side. We know this:

  • His maternal grandmother went by the name of Rita Josephine Callahan
  • She was an active stage mother in San Francisco, California in the late 20’s, early 30’s, judging by the signed publicity photos of her, her children and other show biz types
  • She had 4 children: Patrick, Jerry (Francis), David and Eleanor (Stella – my grandmother)
  • She had lived in Washington State, and her daughter Eleanor may have been born there
  • In some of the family pictures of the children, the last name of “Long” has been crossed off and replaced by Callahan.
  • My father originally thought that he had visited Rita in the San Francisco Masonic Home, but my mother remembered it as being Laguna Honda Hospital.

During Ancestry.com’s  free  1930 census record promotion, I searched and found a Rita J. Callahan in San Francisco.

Rita J Callahan
Gender: Female

Joseph J Callahan 48
Rita J Callahan 37
Marie C Callahan 19
Francis J Callahan 16
Margaret M Hermann 17
Frances M Hermann 30
Marie R Hermann 39

Here was my father’s response:

I think Pat Callahan was born around 1917 0r 1918.  David was the oldest and joined the merchant marines when he was about 15 years old. I contacted the Laguna Honda Hopital and found a Rita J. calahan that had died in June of 1963. I talked to my brother and he thought that was about the year that Rita died.  I ordered a Death certificate from VitalChec.  It takes a couple of months for them to get the certificate and I am waiting for it. The Rita born in 1893 would be to young, she would be 19 years old when my mother was born and looking at pictures, Rita looks to old when my mother was little.

I can attest to seeing that picture of Rita and my grandmother. From that picture it looks as if Rita may have been Eleanor’s grandmother, or had her late in life.

Anyone with information on Rita Josephine Callahan, please contact me through this website.

Thanks!

Thomas and Ann Terry of Virginia

Received and email from Jeaneen Terry regarding Thomas and Ann Terry of Virginia. She said she had Thomas’ will, and is related to him through his son Mills, who had a brother named Lewis. That all corresponds well to the information I have on my family of that period, however it is hard to say without seeing the specific information, since people of that time, especially in my family, tended to name their children from a limited selection of names.

I did a quick web search, and found some of the great information that Jeaneen has compiled: http://www.terry-family-historian.com/Greenbrier-FayetteCoVA/Greenbrier-FayetteCoVAMain.htm

I anxiously await her response to see what else she may have.
